Seeking Two Casa Directors/Directresses

OMS Montessori is seeking two dedicated and energetic Montessori Guides for a bilingual Casa class (one English speaking Guide and one French speaking Guide), beginning September 2019. We are a leading non-profit Montessori school, celebrating our 53rd anniversary this year, located in the heart of a residential neighbourhood in Ottawa. The Guides’ hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..

There are four currently four other Casa classes in our close community of approximately 300 students from Toddler to High School. We have a warm, collegial atmosphere with over 50 caring, experienced staff who are deeply committed to Montessori principles. The salary will be based on education, training and experience.

Requirements include Montessori Casa (Primary) certification, experience working with children 3 – 6 years of age, excellent communication skills and the desire and ability to work as part of a team.

L’OMS Montessori recherche deux guides Montessori, dévoués et énergiques pour notre classe bilingue au niveau Casa (un guide de langue anglaise et un guide de langue française) à compter du mois de septembre 2019. Nous sommes une école Montessori sans but lucratif de premier plan, et nous célébrons notre 53e anniversaire cette année. Nous sommes situés au cœur d’un quartier résidentiel à Ottawa. Les heures des guides sont de 7 h 30 à 16 h ou de 9 h à 17 h. 

Nous avons actuellement quatre autres classes de niveau Casa dans notre proche communauté d’environ 300 élèves, du niveau bambin à l’école secondaire. Position Summary

The Element High School is seeking a full-time teacher, to cover a maternity leave, with the possibility of extension, for our combined grades seven and eight adolescent program. We are looking for a person who is dedicated, inspirational, able to effectively communicate with students and parents and who feels working with adolescents is their true calling. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching at the middle school level, specializing in math, and science. A passion for the great outdoors and canoe camping experience is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach grade 7 and 8 math, science and entrepreneurship
  • Work collaboratively with a co-teacher
  • Attend faculty meetings
  • Facilitate hands-on exploration, student collaboration and problem-solving; integrate Montessori and innovative pedagogical practices into the curriculum
  • Create meaningful partnerships with students, parents and families
  • Assess and provide on-going feedback to students. Report to parents regularly through parent/teacher conferences, report cards and phone calls
  • Maintain accurate and up to date lesson plans and records of student work

Skills and Abilities:

  • Uses student-centred teaching methodologies and other research-based practices;
  • Is energetic, engaging, and creative with a clear love of students and the learning process;
  • Collaborates with fellow teachers to develop integrated curriculum;
  • Integrates educational technology to facilitate student-centred learning;
  • Is a lifelong learner who is committed to continuing professional development and maintain memberships in professional organizations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ontario College of Teachers certification
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field required; Master’s degree preferred;
  • Three to five years of teaching experience;
  • Proficiency in digital tools for collaborative, student-centred learning.

Experience teaching seventh and eighth grade students, teaching math and science is preferred.

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

OMS Montessori (OMS) has been providing an authentic Montessori education in our nation’s capital for over 50 years. A non-profit organization with a staff of over 50 passionate Montessori educators and administrators, OMS is one of 3 CCMA accredited schools in the Ottawa area. The passion and commitment of our team of educators is truly exceptional, with many members having dedicated decades to our organization and our organization’s mission.

With almost 300 engaged young people at our school, we provide a Montessori education from 18 months of age through 18 years in both official languages. OMS is unique in the Ottawa area in providing a high school program based on Montessori principles. The Element High School, a part of OMS, has been in operation since 2003 with Junior High students (grades 7/8), and since 2015 with the High School (grades 9-12).  

We are looking for a Head of Schools who shares our vision for an authentic Montessori learning environment and has the talent and perseverance to lead the comprehensive educational offering we provide to the community. Reporting to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the ideal candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the operations of the schools across both campuses. This includes growing enrollment, attracting and retaining great staff, sustaining a strong parent community, and ensuring an exceptional educational experience for each child.

The ideal candidate will be available to start after the close of the 2018/2019 school year or earlier.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and manage the pre-school, elementary and high school programs.
  • Ensure the school maintains a high-quality authentic Montessori learning experience for each enrolled student.
  • Create and foster a positive, constructive and engaging work environment for all staff.
  • Deliver educational programs in both official languages (French and English).
  • Build a strong group of engaged volunteers from the parent community.
  • Manage the relationship with the educational regulatory bodies in Ontario and ensure Ontario educational requirements and regulations are met.
  • Manage an operating budget in excess of $4 million and ensure that OMS remains financially strong.
  • Be an ambassador for OMS within the community and ensure that the annual enrolment targets are met.
  • Work with the volunteer Board of Directors to implement the strategic plan.
  • Maintain a strong administrative team and faculty through effective recruiting, development and performance management of the employees of the school.
  • Problem-solve student, parent, and staff issues collaboratively.
  • Create and implement a marketing strategy that builds awareness and grows the school’s profile within the community.


  • A minimum of two years of experience as a school administrator, pre-school director, school director, principal, or vice principal with an additional minimum of 5 years classroom experience.
  • Experience in leading and evolving a high performing organization.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience leading large scale organizational change and strategic initiatives.
  • Experience managing the relationship with a government educational regulatory body.
  • AMI diploma or equivalent
  • Must be currently eligible to work in Canada.


  • Experience teaching in an AMI Montessori classroom.
  • Familiarity with Ontario elementary and high school curriculum as well as Ontario Ministry of Education requirements and regulations.
  • Fluent in French.
