Candidates should have strong leadership skills, be well-organized, enthusiastic, compassionate, inspired about teaching and have a team spirit enabling them to work effectively with colleagues and parents.  The ideal candidate will have a sincere desire to be part of a holistic school which enriches Montessori Academics with a very well-rounded, creative curriculum.

Nelephant Montessori, a small not-for-profit school in St. Catharines, is seeking a full time School Director. We are looking for a passionate individual with strong leadership skills, who loves children and education. An individual who has the visionary capacity to bring a team of talented employees, parents and volunteers to the next level of excellence in a cooperative environment. This position will include management, budgeting, staff supervision, strategic planning, and community development. Knowledge of child development as well as post secondary education are required as is a Vulnerable Sector Screening. Early Childhood Education or Montessori Training is preferred. Individuals with comparable combination of training and experience will be considered.

Job Description

Working with and reporting to the Board of Directors, the School Director performs a wide range of duties including, but not limited to the following:

Planning and Organizing

  • Develop long term goals and objectives to support the strategic direction of the organization
  • Ensure that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization and comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards

Leading

  • Understand ethical behaviour and business practices, and ensure that your own behaviour and the behaviour of others is consistent with these standards and aligns with the values of the organization
  • Communicate and build relationships with staff and families to promote a strong school community.

Communication and Education

  • Develop methods of communication with parent body regarding success of program and facilitate feedback
  • Communicate with clients and other stakeholders to gain community support for the program and to solicit input to improve the program

Policies and Procedures

  • Review Policy and Procedures manual on an annual basis and recommend necessary modifications to the Board
  • Ensure the review of Policies and Procedures by all teaching staff

Financial Management

  • Develop funding proposals for the program to ensure the continuous delivery of services
  • Work in conjunction with the Treasurer to develop and monitor an operating budget which ensures the financial wellbeing of the school

General

  • Abide by Nelephant Montessori Code of Conduct, Values Statements, Policies and provincial Privacy Legislation
  • Maintain confidentiality of parents, teachers, staff, Board of Directors and general policies and practices of Nelephant Montessori School

Volunteer Board Director – Nelephant Montessori School

Nelephant Montessori, founded in 1971, is a small not-for- profit CCMA accredited school in St. Catharines seeking an individual with expertise in Human Resources to serve as a volunteer Board Member.  

Our mission is to provide children with an authentic Montessori environment that will inspire a lifelong love of learning. We are a CCMA accredited school passionate about shaping confident, independent, and happy children aged 18 months – 6 years.

Responsibilities:

The successful appointee will participate in a small friendly group of Board Members dedicated to the growth and development of a close knit organization. Board Members provide strategic oversight, direct policy, and act as stewards for the organization. This is an excellent opportunity to gain board experience. We are seeking a minimum 2-year commitment to assist with the following tasks:

  • Share knowledge and expertise relating to Human Resource and employment matters
  • Engage fully in monthly evening board meetings, as well as 2 semi-annual general meetings
  • Assist with yearly performance reviews and participate in hiring/interviewing
  • Implement tasks delegated amongst the Board of Directors
  • Provide a time commitment of approximately 4-6 hours a month, on average
